July 2008 EDC, Microsoft, IBM Meet with Queen Rania to Advance Jordan Education Initiative EDC’s Daniel Light of the Center for Children and Technology was in Amman, Jordan, this week to renew the Jordan Education Initiative (JEI), a country-wide program that EDC is evaluating with partners, RTI International and WorldLinks Arab Region. After a briefing on the initiative, which uses e-learning in Jordanian schools, Her Majesty Queen Rania launched the second stage of the initiative and its plans for the next three years. The Queen praised the JEI’s continued ability to draw more partners from around the world five years after its launch, serving as a testament to the initiative’s success. She thanked the sponsors for their roles in activating a real partnership between the public and private sectors. In addition to EDC, participants represented Creative Associates, and several IT companies, including Microsoft, Cisco, Intel, and IBM. Representatives from the education, information and communications technology, and planning ministries also attended. The Jordan Education Initiative uses e-learning and information and communication technologies to transform the quality of teaching and learning in Jordanian schools. It was established as a test bed for introducing these resources into classrooms and supporting innovative teaching practice. EDC’s evaluation work, funded by USAID, is focused on examining the extent to which new ways of teaching and learning are developing and understanding the factors involved.
