Challenge
Niger faces many challenges that threaten food and nutrition security and resilience. Farmers have little access to advances in agricultural practices and technologies to fight the effects of climate change that decrease both crop and livestock production.
To address rates of food insecurity in Niger, the USAID-funded Food for Peace project supports 500 communities and nearly 900,000 people with programs for distribution, nutrition, food security, and citizens’ self-sufficiency. As part of this large-scale program, EDC is a subcontractor to Catholic Relief Services and leads the workforce development component of the project.
Key Activities
EDC will accomplish the following:
- Work with and equip local partner Community Development Assistance (ADC) to deliver life and technical skills training for livelihoods to youth from extremely poor and chronically vulnerable households
- Train youth using tailored versions of EDCs Work Ready Now (WRN) and Be Your Own Boss (BYOB) curriculum.
- Implement a localized Labor Market Assessment in Niger
- Develop and deliver high-quality instructor professional development opportunities that support youth learning
Impact
- EDC and ADC will deliver technical and life skills training to 12,000 youth, aged 12–24 years in Zinder, Magaria, and Dungass, Niger.
