Naomi Hupert, a senior research scientist and expert in K–12 literacy and digital learning, leads the Center for Children & Technology at EDC. For over 25 years, her research has identified effective strategies to strengthen pre-K–12 education systems. Her studies deepen understanding of how educational media and technology can help teachers and families enhance learning. Her work also responds to urgent challenges in education, such as improving instruction and support for youths with disabilities.

Naomi provides guidance on early literacy learning to the Center to Advance Elementary Science Assessment, Research, and Technology, a national R&D center funded by Institute of Education Sciences and the National Science Foundation. As a member of EDC’s Changing Adolescent Reading Trajectories team, she is advancing the goals of a mid-phase Education Innovation Research project designed to strengthen literacy outcomes for middle-grade students with significant reading difficulties. Both projects use technology to support educators in improving student outcomes.

For 18 years, Naomi led research and evaluation studies of the Ready To Learn program, including studies on science, literacy, and mathematics. Previously, she was the co-principal investigator of the New Mexico Reading First Initiative Evaluation.

widely published author, Naomi is the co-author of the op-ed, “America’s Youth Literacy Crisis Isn’t New—It’s Been Ignored.” Her findings and insights appear in numerous outlets, including Education WeekEdSurgeK–12 DiveEdutopia, and WBHM Public Radio.

Naomi holds an MSEd, with a specialization in Literacy and Language-Related Learning Disabilities, from the Bank Street College of Education.
