Emily Fagan, an expert in mathematics education, develops innovative and effective learning experiences for students and teachers. She has extensive expertise in instructional design, professional development, instructional coaching, and strategies to promote success for a wide range of learners. Before joining EDC, she taught high school and middle grades mathematics and social studies. She brings this experience to her design and delivery of outstanding face-to-face and online courses and workshops for teachers.
Emily’s current work focuses on strengthening mathematics intervention through professional development and student activities that are grounded in research-based guiding principles. She is an author of the recently published Mathematics Intervention Toolkit which offers free professional learning resources for intervention teachers, math leaders/directors, and other administrators. She is also a member of EDC’s Data Paths team that is developing resources to support teachers in integrating data science investigations in K–12 classrooms.
Emily specializes in the use of formative assessment to support teachers in targeting mathematics lessons to meet students’ needs and strengths. She has produced an extensive body of work on this topic, including Bringing Math Students into the Formative Assessment Equation, Uncovering Student Thinking About Mathematics in the Common Core (Grades K–2 Grades 3–5), and “Targeting Instruction with Formative Assessment Probes.”
Emily received an AB from Harvard in Economics and is a certified mathematics and social studies teacher.
