EDC's Tony Streit Appointed to National Academies Committee on Media Literacy Education
EDC’s Tony Streit has been appointed to the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (NASEM) planning committee charged with organizing a major workshop on media literacy education for children and youth.
The two-day public workshop will take place June 11–12, 2026 at the Keck Center in Washington, D.C., and will to examine how young people navigate today’s fragmented information environment.
“I’m humbled to be a part of this esteemed committee,” said . “This is a critical time to advance research-proven media literacy practice and scale the integration of media literacy in all academic content areas.”
Streit is one of ten committee members selected by the National Academies, joining researchers and practitioners from UC Berkeley, Stanford, Northwestern, the University of Maryland, Drexel, and other institutions. The committee is chaired by Glynda A. Hull, Distinguished Professor of Education at UC Berkeley, and sponsored by the Carnegie Corporation of New York.
He brings decades of experience at the intersection of media education, youth development, and informal learning. At EDC, he served as Principal Investigator for the National Center on Afterschool and Summer Enrichment (NCASE), a technical assistance initiative of the U.S. Administration for Children and Families focused on expanding access to high-quality out-of-school time learning. He also co-led SRVCE, a civics education curriculum funded by the U.S. Department of Defense that integrates media literacy with exploration of public sector careers.
The appointment reflects EDC’s deep roots in media literacy education — from a decade leading Adobe Youth Voices across 60 countries, to curriculum development integrating media literacy into K–12 civics and STEM instruction, to ongoing research on how children and youth learn through and about media.
