Developing the AI-Enabled Software Developer Profile
Challenge
The use of artificial intelligence (AI) is garnering a lot of hype around its potential impact on worker productivity. Yet there has been little discussion about the specific skills and knowledge that software developers will need to leverage AI as a powerful tool.
In partnership with Google, EDC convened an elite group of eight software developers and worked with an advisory group of 13 industry leaders to address this issue. The result was the 50-page occupational profile for an AI-enabled software developer. The first of its kind, the profile identifies the skills, habits, and knowledge software developers will need to maximize the affordances of AI. The profile provides industry and education partners a road map to “future proof” developers who are entering the field.
Key Activities
The project carried out the following activities:
- Convened a three-day panel of experts.
- Led a strategic process to identify and define the skill set used by programmers and engineers at the forefront of using AI.
- Developed the AI-enabled software engineer occupational profile.
Impact
- The new profile will inform industry workforce development, K–12 education, and postsecondary efforts to prepare and upskill technology workers to use AI in software development.
