EDC has been selected to lead a consultancy under the Belize Skills for the Future Program to expand girls’ participation in science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics (STEAM) and prepare them for future careers in Fourth Industrial Revolution fields.

In collaboration with Belize’s Ministry of Education, Culture, Science and Technology, and with funding from the Inter-American Development Bank, the initiative Promoting Participation of Women in 4IR and STEAM Fields will engage girls ages 11–15 in hands-on extracurricular learning. Through these experiences, girls will explore STEAM in practical ways that build interest, confidence, and clearer pathways to education and careers in high-growth sectors.

Across Belize, many students have limited access to learning opportunities that align with the skills needed in today’s economy. This consultancy addresses that gap by developing a curated set of training materials and activities that make STEAM learning relevant, creative, and connected to real-world applications. Girls will take part in site visits, interactive workshops, mentorship with women working in STEAM fields, and collaborative innovation projects that strengthen problem-solving and leadership skills.

EDC will work with universities, businesses, artist networks, museums, and houses of culture across Belize’s blue, green, and orange economies, including ocean conservation, renewable energy, creative industries, and sustainable livelihoods. These partnerships will broaden girls’ exposure to STEAM learning and career possibilities while strengthening connections between schools and local private sector stakeholders. The project expects to reach 1,000 girls across all six districts of Belize and will culminate in district-level STEAM festivals that showcase girl-led innovation projects. By elevating girls’ voices and creativity, this work aims to shift perceptions about who belongs in STEAM education and careers and supports a more inclusive, future-ready workforce.
