La Fuerza-STEM’s Telenovela Nominated for Children’s or Family Viewing Series Emmy

La Fuerza de Creer: Dulce Sazón, a science-infused telenovela that is part of La Fuerza-STEM, an EDC initiative that supports Spanish-speaking families in promoting their children’s early science learning, has been nominated for a Children’s or Family Viewing Series Emmy Award. The four other award nominees include Fraggle Rock: Back to the Rock, Jane, Malory Towers, and Raven’s Home. The winner will be announced at the awards ceremonies on March 15 in Los Angeles, California.
The La Fuerza-STEM initiative is funded by the National Science Foundation and builds on a strong partnership among EDC, Literacy Partners, Univision, and Creative Depot. Together, the partners seek to build the capacity of Spanish-speaking caregivers—their power, la fuerza—to support science learning through everyday activities and spark interest in STEM careers. The initiative includes free family science workshops; the La Fuerza de Creer: Dulce Sazón telenovela; and two rigorous national studies that are determining the effectiveness of the telenovela and workshops.
In December, La Fuerza de Creer: Dulce Sazón won a Children’s and Family Emmy Award in the Public Service Initiative category, and in November, La Fuerza-STEM received a Silver Anthem Award. These awards build upon previous recognitions, including a Silver Telly Award and a Communicator Award.
“Our team is deeply honored by these recognitions of our telenovela and the whole initiative,” said Joy Lorenzo Kennedy, EDC senior research scientist and La Fuerza-STEM principal investigator (PI). “The Spanish-speaking families who have guided us in our production of the telenovela and the design of the research share these awards with us, and we thank them for their contributions.”
“We hope these prestigious awards will help the telenovela and family science workshops to become even more widely available to Spanish-speaking families,” added Jessica Mercer Young, EDC principal research scientist and La Fuerza-STEM co-PI. “We believe that this new and innovative approach holds a strong potential to spark interest in science and STEM careers.”
