Haner Hernandez
Haner Hernández has 39 years of experience in planning, implementing, and evaluating programs and services across the public health continuum. His approach is grounded in eliminating disparities that negatively affect people’s health. As a person in long-term recovery from substance use disorder, he brings invaluable insights to supporting recovery. He demonstrates his commitment to impacting Social Determinants of Health by working in partnership with local communities, policy makers, people with lived and living experiences, service providers, and community organizers. Originally from Borikén (Puerto Rico), he is fluent in Spanish and English.
Within EDC, Haner is a Senior Technical Advisor and Technical Assistance (TA) Associate for the Massachusetts Center of Excellence on Problem Gambling Prevention. Beyond EDC, he delivers tailored TA, capacity building, and training to both people in front line service delivery roles and people in leadership, policy making, and senior management roles. to a wide range of organizations and institutions across the country funded by federal, state, and local sources.
Haner teaches at the New England Schools of Prevention and Addiction Studies and the Best Practices School. He serves on the Board of Directors of Faces and Voices of Recovery and the steering committee of the National Hispanic and Latino Behavioral Health Center of Excellence.
Haner holds a PhD in Public Health from the University of Massachusetts, Amhurst and a GED (high school equivalence), which he earned in prison.
