Pam Buffington, EDC’s director of Rural STEM Initiatives, is a national expert in rural education, mathematics education, and technology integration. As the co-Chair of the Rural Research Advisory Committee of the National Rural Education Association, she co-developed and is contributing to the advancement of a National Rural Research Education Agenda.

Buffington works with policymakers, education leaders, and teachers to improve K–12 student outcomes. She shares her knowledge of effective STEM education, rural education, place-based learning, education technology, and distance learning networks at regional, state, and national forums.

Buffington advances the work of the REL Northeast & Islands, REL Appalachia, and REL Midwest to widely share effective strategies to improve education. She has developed dozens of resources and trainings, is the lead developer of a forthcoming REL Midwest Teaching Fractions toolkit, and has produced a new resource on effective educational assessment.

Buffington holds a PhD in Education from the Union Institute, an MA in Curriculum and Instruction from Lesley College, and a BS in Secondary Education and Mathematics with a minor in Physics from the University of Maine at Farmington.
