Suzanne Wertman, EDC Senior Training and Technical Assistance Associate, is a maternal health and community health expert. A Certified Nurse-Midwife, she has over 28 years of experience working to improve maternal health, fostering midwife leadership development, advancing effective policy change to increase midwifery access, and providing midwifery care.

As a key member of our Community Birth and Doula Initiative team, Suzanne implements initiatives from Massachusetts’ 2024 Maternal Health Act including integrating home and birth center care into the existing maternity care ecosystem. Beyond EDC, Suzanne promotes community health and shares community-based solutions through the Coastal Journalism Hub.

Prior to joining EDC, Suzanne served as state government affairs consultant for the American College of Nurse-Midwives (ACNM) where she led professional advocacy efforts and leadership development to increase midwifery access through state policy change. For many years, she has worked as a certified nurse-midwife, a clinical trainer, and taught courses in maternal health, health policy, and professional issues in midwifery as an adjunct faculty member and instructor for higher education institutions.

Suzanne was selected as a Duke-Johnson & Johnson Nurse Leadership Program Fellow and is a long-time member of the North Carolina Nurses Association. She is a Past-President of the North Carolina affiliate of ACNM, and for six years she served on ACNM’s Leadership Development Committee.

Suzanne holds an MSN in Nurse-Midwifery, a BSN in Nursing from the University of Pennsylvania, and a BA in Biology/Medical Anthropology from Mount Holyoke College.
