Challenge
The Central African Republic (CAR) faces significant educational challenges due to political instability and socioeconomic crises, leaving many children out of school without access to quality education. These barriers are especially severe in remote communities, where limited connectivity, scarce educational resources, and a shortage of trained teachers make it even more difficult for children to access foundational literacy, numeracy, and life skills education.
EDC’s Apprentissage Accéléré par Instruction Audio (AiA) pilot project, funded by the World Bank, addresses these challenges by developing eight interactive audio instruction (IAI) programs tailored to CAR’s Accelerated Learning Program (ALP). This pilot aims to demonstrate the effectiveness of IAI methodology in overcoming barriers to education by providing context-appropriate, scalable audio-based learning solutions that reach out-of-school children, particularly in hard-to-reach areas.
Key Activities
The project is carrying out the following activities:
- Developing eight IAI programs (four in French and four in math) aligned with CAR’s ALP curriculum
- Collaborating with CAR’s Ministry of Education for culturally relevant content
- Producing high-quality audio materials, including instructional scripts and original songs
- Providing recommendations for pilot implementation and scaling strategies
Impact
- Designed eight IAI programs to support literacy, numeracy, and life skills
- Created culturally relevant educational content for diverse CAR communities
- Enhanced potential for scalable, cost-effective education solutions in CAR
- Strengthened partnerships with the Ministry of Education
- Introduced the effectiveness of IAI methodology to CAR’s Ministry of Education and the broader education sector, showcasing its wide reach, relative low cost, and in-service teacher training component
